Food in Muar

1. Otak-Otak

The famous food in Muar is Otak-otak. Otak-otak is produced from fish fillet mixed with a spicy mixture such as pepper, garlic, onion, turmeric, lemongrass and coconut milk. The mixture is wrapped in coconut leaves and baked or steamed. After that, it will be wrapped in banana leaves, it is known as pais.
Although fish otak-otak are the most common, there are also otak-otak made from shrimp, producing a more varied texture. In Muar, there are also squid otak-otak and chicken otak-otak.

2. Satay

Satay is a Southeast Asian dish made from flavored meats, skewers and roasts, served with sauce.


Satay is roasted or roasted over a wood fire or charcoal, then served with a variety of spicy seasonings. Satay can be served in a variety of sauces. However, it is often served in a combination of soy sauce and beans. Therefore, peanut sauce is often called satay sauce.


The popular Satay shop in Muar is Satay Warisan. Apart from satay, this shop also serves nasi lemak and lontong.

3. Asam Pedas

Asam Pedas is a Maritime Southeast Asian sour and spicy fish stew dish. The main ingredient in spicy acid is usually seafood or freshwater fish. They are cooked in tamarind with chilli and spices.


The cooking process involves soaking the pulp of tamarind fruit until soft and then squeezing the juice to cook the fish. Acid paste can be substituted for convenience. Vegetables such as eggplant, okra and tomatoes are added.
